Katherine Tingley and the Theatrical Work of the Universal Brotherhood and Theosophical Society: 1898-1929

Aeschylus' The Eumenides

In Katherine Tingley's version of Aeschylus's The Eumenides she interpreted the Furies as beings who are freed from slavery to their lower/base natures and achieve contact with their higher/spiritual natures through the influence of "higher thought." She taught that The Eumenides was a mystery drama containing esoteric knowledge with the potential to provide contemporary people with hidden spiritual wisdom.

The following are photographs of a production of The Eumenides that took place in the Greek Theatre in 1922 under the direction of Katherine Tingley.
